House Beautiful
Full-length drama
3 W, 2 M
Victoria, a jaded millennial with no real home of her own, returns to her decaying Long Island town to visit with her grandfather Edwin—and perhaps move in. Victoria arrives to discover that not only has he taken a turn for the worse, her frazzled Aunt Fran is also emptying the family home of its precious heirlooms. Victoria stays and fights back, but the more Edwin’s body fails, the more the mysteries of the universe seem to crack open and rain on the family, introducing a stream of strange happenings and unwelcome visitors. As each family member faces the end of everything they hold dear, they find new definitions of home and family, doing their best to accept that growing older is both the beauty and tragedy of being alive. HOUSE BEAUTIFUL explores family dynamics across generations, leaving the past behind, and celebrating the life that exists in the tiniest of houses and smallest of rooms.
HOUSE BEAUTIFUL was commissioned by Theater J for their Locally Grown Festival. It received staged readings at Theater J and the Kennedy Center's Page-to-Stage Festival, and was workshopped at the Sewanee Writers' Conference. The play was produced by the theatre department at Wichita State University. Winner, Wichita State University Playwriting Contest; Semi-Finalist, O'Neill National Playwrights Conference.
